Hooker's sea lions are the rarest species of sea lion in the world and are endemic to New Zealand. After being hunted nearly to extinction, they are now protected and making a comeback, though their numbers are still small. They exist only in the Catlins and Otago Peninsula regions of New Zealand. Males can reach 1,000 pounds and can be quite aggressive.
